Excellent bluetooth Jun 06, 2010
By C. Jake
"Researcher ad infinitum"
I absolutely love the Jawbone Icon. I don't make any decisions like this in haste and really did A LOT of research for months. I was intent on getting a bluetooth earphone that was both comfortable, and such that NO ONE could detect a difference between it and speaking directly into the phone. I have been more than pleased. I have a Motorola Droid, and people always complain if I try to use the phone balanced between my shoulder and jaw while trying to use my hands. They say I sound like a robot! The Jawbone has been so wonderful that I've been using my cell phone instead of my landline (thanks to Friends and Family, it's affordable), I'm a safer driver when I need to use my phone in the car, and it truly does "assassinate" wind and any other outside interference. In addition, for comfort, it comes with several earpieces and configurations to get the best, secure fit, regardless of the size of your ear or how you feel most comfortable wearing an earbud. GREAT BUY! You pay a little more upfront, but you'll be completely satisfied!

Ann in Richmond Mar 28, 2010

I LOVE IT !! I have only had my ICON, THE ACE for a few weeks. It has the most clear sound, it doesn't pick up every little noise in the background, it has a good fit, my voice is clear to the caller & it's light-weight! The only thing I don't like is the cheap ear loop. It's hard to believe that Jawbone would make such a great bluetooth, with such a cheap ear-loop. Other than this, it's GREAT !!

Icon is definitely a standout Jul 21, 2010
By Adam After purchasing a Motorola Droid during the holidays (January, I believe), I had been considering buying a Bluetooth headset for it. I finally committed and decided that the Jawbone ICON Ace was the one that I wanted. I did a little background on it and everything that's been said about call quality, ease of use, and everything else is spot on.
The call quality is superb. Everyone that I've talked to using while using the headset have never complained about background noise (and due to my line of work, I am in and around very loud environments frequently). NoiseAssassin works as advertised and I am glad that Jawbone advertises it so heavily. The headset is perfect and has no problems handling the volume levels of calls, even when I set my phone as loud as it can go. The voices may sound "tinny" at times, but for the most part, the calls are as clear as I could want.
The design of the headset is superb. This particular design is flashy without being overbearing or gaudy. The back of the headset does tend to get covered in fingerprints fairly easy, but that can be fixed quickly by just wiping it off. The VAS sensor on the inside of the headset rests perfectly on the side of your head, with mine sitting at the top of my cheek. The headset weighs enough that, combined with the light touch of the VAS, after a short period of time I tend to forget that I have it on. The only complaint I have with the design is the earpieces. The ergo-designed ones fit better than the normal ones with an ear loop, although sometimes I still feel like it's on the verge of falling out. Because of that, I have started to use the ear loop as extra protection in case it does. After about 2 hours of use, your inner ear does seem to get a little sore, but I also am constantly adjusting it, so that may have some bearing on the soreness. The single, multi-use button takes a little bit of getting used to, but is definitely easy to use once you get it down. The voice dialing is nice and the button is easy to find while driving and easy to press.
Pairing it with my phone was a breeze. Simply turned on the phone's Bluetooth and turned on the headset. Paired on the first try. As much as I have used the Ace, I have never had problems with it connecting and disconnecting from the phone or anything of that nature.
Overall, the Jawbone ICON definitely lives up to it's reputation and, now that I've used it, I wouldn't go with any other product. Jawbone will always be the first place I look for headsets from here on out.

Great function but, poor battery, pitiful charger Jul 19, 2010
By S. Huhta Great function but, poor battery, pitiful charger
The functionality of the Jawbone Icon is great - everything works fine and the sound and voice pickup is wonderful.
But, the battery is very, very poor after several months of use. I talk a lot in my business but, when I first got the unit I could make it until the end of the day without charging. Now, by 10 am the battery is completely gone - even after an all night charge. I bought when these things first came out - even before they were available on Amazon - so I have had it for a number of months.
Next, the charger unit is a total joke. The charger cord is exactly 2 inches long - yes you read this correct, 2 whole inches. A/C plugs are not easy to get to so when you want to plug the Icon in somewhere you have to crawl under a deck or around on the floor. Being that this thing needs constant charging this 2 inch charger cord is a real problem. It would seem, as much as these things cost that Jawbone would put a better battery and a reasonable charge cord in the package.
I have had several blue tooth head sets and I am totally hooked. This one is expensive and works as advertised but, if you talk much you might be better served buying another brand.

Attractive and useful for what it is, but lower audio quality than I'd like. Jul 26, 2011
By Johann Grimm I've been using this product with my Samsung Galaxy S and PS3 for over a year now. I've used it extensively for both voice chat and phone calls as well as been on the other end of a friend with the identical model.
I generally am able to achieve 3 to 4 hours of talk time which I think is acceptable for a product like this and can charge in 45 to 60 minutes.
In brief: The icon is a mini-blue tooth head set that focuses on being both unobtrusive and attractive with good voice quality at a good price; in this is succeeds impressively. It's features and the lack of alternatives in the marketplace contribute to it's short comings though. While it's small size reduces it's weight and increases it's comfort dramatically it decreases control on the device itself. It doesn't have audiophile sound reproduction, it distractingly amplifies most non-voice mouth sounds, and it has virtually no security features. Though it is far from perfect it is simply the best thing out there to date and remains the product to beat in it's market space.
Buttons & Function Mic: The Jaw bone does a great job of picking up voice understandably despite being small, this is due primarily to the mic's contact with the cheek. While the innovation is amazing at making the icon comfortable for prolonged use and making the user understood the caveat is that chewing or beverage consumption is also greatly amplified to a distressingly loud level. Fortunately the multi-functional button can easily toggle the device on and off quickly during conversation for those moments when your need to eat or drink is greater than to speak (while playing PS3). Not a viable option while on a phone however.
Mic LED: Red & white make identifying the devices state easily identifiable. Connecting, connected, pair mode, charging, fully charged.
Main power: Used to turn the device on & off as well as put the device in discovery mode to pair when the multifunction button is held while powering on. I don't care for it's position on the interior aspect of the device however.
Multifunction button: There is only one button on the Icon, so it has multiple functions: toggling mute, (dis)connect, and battery information. While connecting and disconnecting is easy all other functions are more challenging than I would like and volume control is strictly from whatever your connecting too (i.e. phone, PS3, GPS). It's only slightly annoying, but it'd be nice if they improved it in the next model.
Micro-USB charger: The default charging station's Micro USB mini-cable is actually too snug and the device requires two hands to remove, but it's never accidently become unplugged. I don't think there's actually any danger of such a small device becoming disconnected from such a small USB cable, but it's somewhat reassuring that it won't be going anymore unless a human or animal is deliberately trying to disconnect it. My guess is that a small dog, cat, or child would be deterred from removing the icon from the charging base but would still easily chew off the ear piece, a dog more than ~30lbs would probably be able to remove it with little difficulty.
Speaker: This is one of my bigger problems with the Icon, while the other party's voice is understandable it sounds tinny and metallic. The speaker is actually larger than that of my Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro Earphones (White) and while the Icon's price point is less than half of those earphones, as an audiophile I still find it's audio quality considered alone unacceptable. However for the price, wireless function, and different nature of the device it's audio performance is marginally acceptable. It must also be said that it does perform better than all other wireless headsets I've owned by a substantial margin, just don't expect to use it for music.
Ear pillows & hook: The major problem I have with the Icon is that they don't really fit my ears well. The best fit I've been able to manage is with the largest ear pillows with the loop extender in concert with the ear hook, yet it still requires adjustment and occasionally falls out if I'm being active or tilting my head at unfavorable angles. This is a major product flaw but a universal one in the Icon's product space, and a catastrophic one if your idea of a blue-tooth headset is totally unfettered mobility. I feel that hearing aids have largely conquered this problem and would like to see those solutions integrated into blue-tooth headsets. When a headset will stay in place while doing calisthenics, on a treadmill, performing CPR, running up stairs, and possibly doing gymnastics I'll be fully satisfied, until then I believe there is work to be done. Again, this is a universal problem of compact headsets and not their most important feature (portability, comfort, style, convenience).
Security: Security is all but non-existent. Connectivity is simply too easy as all devices have the same pathetic access code (1111) so in discovery mode security could be easily breached and with the prevalence of blue-tooth capable devices the possibility is not acceptably low or zero to me personally. However this compromise is convenient and as long as you don't try to link it in a coffee shop, traffic, or a lecture hall (or any place there are multiple blue-tooth devices) you shouldn't have an issue. Since discovery mode is a physical toggle on the Icon you can control this vulnerability as much as you can control the physical device. Cloning or ease dropping does vaguely concern me, but anyone close enough to do it can hear half the conversation anyway. Still, since the pass codes to all the Icons is "1111" I can't help be believe that any encryption the device might use to foil ease droppers could be easily bypassed.
Conclusion: If money were no object and the perfect device were the goal, the Jawbone Icon would fall worlds short. However there are physical limitations for non-imaginary devices as well as product cost that must be considered. As technology advances I have little doubt that the Icon series will continue to improve if consumers demand increased audio-quality (which I feel should be the next top priority) as well as other features. Previous to the Icon mic quality of blue-tooth headsets was terrible, and the Icon's mic is perfectly acceptable (it's no Samson Go Mic Compact USB Microphone - Plug n' Play but it's the best wireless mini-headset I've experienced to date) so progress continues. It's battery charges reasonably quickly and drains slowly enough. It's ear fit isn't the best, but in ear devices rarely do without custom inserts (generally time consuming and fairly pricey) since all our ear canals are different. The Icon's supplied fit solutions are acceptable compared to similar devices, but again you may find them lacking. Over all I'd like to see a lot of changes to this product space, but for the foreseeable future this is the best thing out there.
